The standard engine on the 2024 Sierra HD — PRO, SLE, SLT, AT4, and DENALIE trims — is a 6.6-liter V8 gas engine that generates a colossal 401 horsepower and 464 lb-ft of torque. Even stronger than that is the available Duramax turbo-diesel that propels peak torque to a whopping 975 lb-ft of torque.

Either engine works with an Allison® 10-speed automatic transmission with electronically controlled overdrive for incredibly smooth shifting even at low speeds while towing. The transmission’s Auto Grade Braking will downshift when needed to reduce brake wear on downhill grades.

If that wasn’t enough, the GMC Sierra HD’s Allison® transmission features an external auxiliary transmission oil cooler. Essentially, this means that it will keep things cool under the pressure of heavy loads or when you’re towing a trailer to provide optimal performance.
