A Brief History of OKC
Oklahoma City was settled in 1889 and grew quickly, doubling its population in the first ten years. It was a big stop on the famous Route 66, and it soon became known for its stockyards, which brought in people and revenue from surrounding cities.
The city continued to grow throughout the 20th century, adding attractions like a new baseball park and a central library. Today, there are many reasons to visit OKC and many ways to enjoy the time spent there.
Myriad Botanical Gardens & Crystal Bridge Tropical Conservatory
This destination is perfect any time of year. A visit in the winter can be especially refreshing, since it’s always green inside and the free 6-acre Children’s Garden is always warm and full of life.
National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum
This stop is fun for all ages, and sheds light on the history of Oklahoma City’s western heritage. Kids can enjoy Children’s Cowboy Corall, where they can participate in fun hands-on learning activities.
Youth Zone in the Boathouse District
When it’s warm out, nothing beats a family trip to the Youth Zone in the Boathouse District. Here, families can rent kayaks or canoes to take on the Oklahoma River, ride a zipline, or climb the 80-foot tower.
Museum of Osteology
The next time you’re in OKC, be sure to visit the Museum of Osteology. It’s the only bone museum in America, and it’s an interesting stop for all ages. There are hundreds of skeletons and skulls on display from all over the world, as well as a gift shop full of inspiring and engaging souvenirs, perfect for birthday or holiday gifts.
